What do you know?

        Did you        know!

The Elizabethans  were an audience of  listeners . they would say, I'm going to hear a play, not I'm going to see a play. The Elizabethan audience would pick up on words and their various meanings that we wouldn't.

- Marjorie Garber

There were no female actress during this period of time. All the roles were performed by male actors, since it was considered immoral to have a female on stage. No producers or directors were necessary, the actors worked among themselves to improve their performance. They had to do their own stunts. Often including realistic and some times savage scenes of fencing fighting and many more. The performers needed a phenomenal memory in order to speak 25 lines per minute. Furthermore, no play was allowed to be played 2 days in a roll.   Elizabethans expected to see bloody deaths and mutilations. They applauded when pleased, and shouted and threw objects of varieties when bored or displeased. They went to the theatre in great numbers. Why? You will find out soon! Theaters couldn't advertise upcoming plays since it was considered immoral, so they raised a flag and sounded a trumpet before 2:00 p.m.

       Did you know?

Why did they went to the theatre in great numbers?

First of all, there were a large population of uneducated people in England, and the books were so expensive that many of the citizens could not afford such a luxury, so they went to the theatres to "hear" a play. Secondly, they liked to be in crowds and meet people. It became a socializing tool. Last but not the least, they preferred entertainment. Theater-going was something nice to do on a Saturday morning!

Theater flags for advertisement !!!

Theatres couldn't advertise upcoming plays. Because it was considered immoral by the church popes. Therefore, they came up with the idea of raising a flag. Did you know that each flag represented a different types of play. A black flag represented tragedy; a white flag represented comedy; and a red one represented a play of history! They are smart.
