Parts of the Globe Playhouse 1599~1613

The Yard
- also named as the PIT, GROUND, and YARD
- the place where lower class stood during the play
- only for one penny admission
- usually the most crowded place of a theatre during a play

 

Hoisting the playhouse flag
- church people during Shakespeare's time are highly against the idea of going to theatre plays, they consider it as an immoral activity, therefore, the theatres are forbidden to advertise about their upcoming plays
- however, the players thought of a clever way to tell their audience about the upcoming plays by raising a flag
- each type of play is represented by a different color
    a) tragedy: a black flag
    b) comedy: a white flag
    c) history: a red flag
- every afternoon (except for Sundays), they sounded a trumpet before 2:00PM announcing the beginning of a play

 

Middle gallery
- also known as the "Two Penny Rooms"
- usually occupied by middle class

 

The Shadow
- also know as the HEAVEN
- protected players from the rain
- there were pictures on the Shadow depicting the celestial objects
- one of the three main parts of the stage: heaven, earth, hell

The "Hell "
- under the stage, known as the Hell
- in a play, bad people were thrown into the Hell
- one of the three main parts of the stage: heaven, earth, hell

The stage
- this is the stage on which the actors performed
- also know as the "Earth "
- one of the three main parts of the stage: heaven, earth, hell
- the seats right behind the stage are called the "Gentlemen's Rooms " or "Lord's Rooms ", the best seats for play watching

Wardrobe and storage
- the storage room where the equipment of a play was stored
- they had little or no scenery, but lots of props and elaborate costumes
